Pole Fishing Without Rollers... Suggestions?

Hi
Here we go with possibly what you will consider a silly question, but sadly thats just how I am :)

I have just purchased my first (cheap) pole for a go at pole fishing following years of rod fishing, am very much looking forward to it.

One aspect I am thinking over and would appreciate thoughts on. That is, do people have technique suggestions for pole fishing without using rollers?

The reasoning is two-fold.
Firstly, a couple of the areas I plan to fish just dont have the space behind for rollers.
Secondly, I also have a bit of an obsessive compulsive disorder. Part of this manifests in that I need to be able to organise my equipment into full kits, which basically means that I need to be able to get all of my fishing tackle into my rod bag and box. I realise that may seem silly to some people (heck it seems silly to me!) but its a part of me I ca not easilly change.

So.....
Any suggestions for shipping in and out the pole?
I dont want to drag and damage the ends on the floor obviously.

Ive considered the roost-type rod rests, thinking that shipping in can be done in sections (not necessarilly every single joint, as that would be a heck of a fiddle) its an 11m pole in 9 section and so if all sections used (bearing in mind the end esction is cut back so small) then it would be feasible to say ship in 4 bits. But all the roosts look like they are pretty big.

Ive also considered the standard wide rod-rest (the U-shaped ones with tubing as the top) and thought of sutting out the tubing to make a wide u-shape, that would easily take the sections dropped into it.

I also looked at the compact 3inch v-shaped rollers. This wouldnt help with the canals that have restricted room behind, and also, considering they are small, is it really feasible to be able to use them acurately when you are trying to ship in a fish.

So basically after a lot of thinking, I am asking the experience folks for any thoughts or advice (this forum).
I know that most of you will just take large sets of rollers and will probably think "just buy rollers and take in an extra bag" but as I said above, aspects restrict me from that. I do know that this is a strange query and some people may not understand my constraints (please dont make fun, though hey if you do I wont hold it against you).

I just wonder if there is a sparkling idea out there amongst you that would really solve the issue. Something like a miniature folding compact roller set that doubles as a wide roost for narrow canals ().

Be good to hear any suggestions :)

Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings

Alex ( BobSpoons )

Edit:
Ive also just thought, one place I would like to take the new pole has sections with steep banks so the roller principle would be difficult there too.

I quite often lay my rod bag behind me and slide the pole onto & off that instead of rollers. It works well enough and looks to be a solution to both your problems.

Re: Pole Fishing Without Rollers... Suggestions?

Thanks thats a good idea. Rod bag isnt harsh enough to damage the pole.
I had a practice yesterday in the garden and for those areas of limited back-space, the pole does divide into 4 sections quite easilly without too much fuss or need for space (oh how that will be different with a fishy struggling on the end of the line) so am quite comfortable with the methodology now, just need to give it a try in practice.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Any other ideas still welcome too if there are any different thoughts :)
Cheers

Re: Pole Fishing Without Rollers... Suggestions?

Although you've now got the back of the pole sorted, don't forget that you still need somewhere for the front of the sections to rest so that they don't get damaged on the ground.

Re: Pole Fishing Without Rollers... Suggestions?

Yes thanks what I have decided to do is get a 28cm wide-ended rod rest (u-shaped) with the tubing across the top. Cut off the tubing (to make the proper u-shape) and then recover the metal U-shape with new tubing so it protects the pole.
Should make a good wide rod dumping place where no scratches or damage and little space in the tackle box.
Cheers again for suggestions.

Re: Pole Fishing Without Rollers... Suggestions?

Hi Bob s.
Why not get yourself a seatbox with various attachments?? One with legs so that you can attach everything you need to the legs. I struggled even when I used my old 9m pole when I just used a chair. Now, with a seatbox I have my pole roost out to the side, small up and over rollers at the rear and pole sock attached at the front. Ideal if going to cramped banks. I also attach my rod rest, bait weighter and tackle tray and it all fits into the seatbox at the end of the day, along with my terminal tackle in the drawers. My rod bag holds three broken down rods with reels attached and also my poles and brolly so the only other luggage is a lightweight stinkbag for nets and bait boxes and thats it 3 items, nice and light and compact.

Thanks for the suggestion it is a very good one. It did pass my mind but my current tackle box is quite nice so trying to avoid replacing, I think ill give a try without to see how it goes and then maybe have to give in and buy one hehe.
Thanks for posting :)
