| Carp feeding times... My Grandad's friend owns a private lake that he lets me fish in for free. This is great because there are huge carp, tench, roach and perch in it. The problem is that the carp and tench ONLY feed really early in the morning and really late at night. This is really inconvenient for me so my question is; Is there a way of getting carp and tench to feed during the day or whenever I want them to? Cheers ![]() |

| Re: Carp feeding times... Tench have little red eyes that are quite sensitive to light levels, which is one reason why you often find them feeding in the shallower margins during the early mornings and late evenings when the light levels are lower and find that they stop feeding in the margins once the sun rises high in the sky, and I don't think that you can change this behaviour unless you can start prebaiting for them in a particular area in the margins over a period of time; but this can still be especially hard on bright sunlit days. Normally once the sun has risen the Tench seem to move into deeper water away from the bright light or into denser weeded areas on shallower lakes to get away from the bright sunlight, but if you can switch tackle and follow them into deeper swims away from the margins you can still sometimes continue to catch them throughout the day. Carp don't appear to be quite so sensitive to bright sunlight and on a hot summers day they can often be seen moving on or near the surface looking like they are not really feeding but occasionally taking something from the surface film, but bait presentation is usually paramount in order to get a bite when they are like this, as they have plenty of time to examine the bait; until the light levels drop a little. A slight surface ripple is a good thing to have on days like this. Carp can still be caught on the bottom throughout the day in most conditions. But on warm overcast days with a gentle westerly breeze you can usually take both Tench and Carp througout the day. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
