Starter kit for a 4 year old

Hi all

I want to get my son his own starter kit and wondered what people thought of this http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_t...All-Categories or if there was anything else you would recommend.

We are lucky to have a small pond within walking distance that has a few carp and even a goldfish in it.

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

To be honest m8 tele rods are shite and you wilk probly spend more time untangleing the reel. I bought my four year old a 4m elasticated whip and its briliant as its so simple. As for the rest i reckon youd be better buyin bits seperate . Dont spend too much tho as h2d might change his mind lol

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

I have a little old Shakespeare 4000 reel that I have given him, so not worried about the reel. How does
a whip work then?

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

same as a pole except its telescopic, theres no reeling or casting involved , he just gets a bite then pulls up and the elastic does the work, when they get used to that and get confident in catching I would then introduce a rod and reel, but its entirely up to you .
If you do decide to use a rod then Id probably use a small 3pc match rod or a "kiddies" two pice rod.

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

Agree! Simple 4m whip , I didn't even elasticate it. Kids caught gudgeon and small fish . My eldest even landed a 1 LB canal roach on the thing. Reels and 4 year olds are a nightmare.
Keep the rig VERY simple too. A waggler with most of the shot locking the float and then a few 8's well below half way. Make it long enough to sing the small fish in (whip style) and be patient! Looking back it would have been better if I hadn't tried to fish at the same time. Less frayed nerves then.

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

Totally agree with BB... dont fish at the same time it is far too stressfull, I just take my lad down to a local puddle /canal with just his stuff for a few hours

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

just imagine fishing with the line tied on to the end of the rod, but more flexible and instead of reeling in you pass the sections behind you or jus lift the whip high in the air

Re: Starter kit for a 4 year old

Got my son and daughter a whip for £10 each, cracking bits of kit for the kids and dead easy to use and set up.
