basics for a beginner

Hi Im new to the forum and I mainly go sea (shore and boat) fishing but fancy my hand at some freshwater, the only thing Im confused about is what basics I need and the best type of fishing to try first, Iv had a look at the net but theres all sorts of different info which complicates things a bit, so my main question is what equipment should i buy first and any other info really,
many regards
jb

Re: basics for a beginner

Who do you usually get your bait and tackle from ?

Usually a good start, welcome to the forum. If you get no joy there I'm sure we'll be only too glad to help. When you say coarse fishing where are you thinking of, that would be a great start.

It all depends on what waters you intend to fish and what species you intend to catch. Fishing for big Carp is different from catching small roach and perch same as fishing for pike differs from chub and so on and so on . Give us some more info m8 and wel be happy to help

Re: basics for a beginner

Before you join the bivvi brigade (which I am an occasional member of) I would start out learning the basics of fishing such as , tying rigs , a litlle bit of water craft, landing and unhooking a smaller fish with a disgorger, ect ect.
What Im trying to get at is ive seen a lot of carp anglers buy all the gear but have no clue about the foundations of fishing.
My brother wanted to start carp/speci fishing and heres the things we went out and bought him or I gave him

12 foot feeder rod with spare tips(price varies from brand to brand)
medium reel ( about an 6-8000 spool)
Landing net (if your planning on catching big carp eventually then I would suggest 36 - 42 inch)
hooks 8s to 18s
lead shot
forceps and disgorger
unhooking mat
bank sticks
beads
selection of feeders and leads
chair
baits such as - sweetcorn,maggots,worms,bread,small pellets/boilies

thats just a quick list of the top of my head to get you started you can then add things as your fishing progresses.

Re: basics for a beginner

Thats about all what you require Maddison. I was dreading reading this post later today and reading things like...you need bite alarms, rod pods, ready made, quick release coated chod rigs (eh?), 30lb braid, bivvie blah blah blah. Too many people buy all this stuff and turn up at the bank and then just cast in the biggest boilie possible, fiddle with there bite alarms for 10 mins making annoying bleeps across the lake, sit back, go to sleep in the bivvie then get a fish on and heave it to the bank with 20 pound line and call it fishing!!! Tying rigs, unhooking and caring for your catch and basic watercraft should all be learned before moving into the Carp/Specimin sector (bivvie brigade). Nothing better than catching roach or perch on the float, or summer tench or carp on a feeder and quiver tip. Hope you enjoy your first freshwater session jb1992, if you are unsure of what all the above items are, ask at your local tackle shop or on here and they will advise whats best to get you started but I would try your hand at the basics and see what style of course fishing suits you best. I have landed more carp on a simple feeder set up than I ever have using alarms and crazy rigs. Good luck - hope you enjoy it.

Re: basics for a beginner

dont gey me wrong i have alarms and bivvie ect but as you say the basics have to be there, thats why I like to class myself as an allrounder.
I took my brother to the tackle shop last month and he pointed at a nice tribal rod quiver,
he said " oohh that looks nice how much is it ? " I said " do you even know what it is ?" he said "no but it looks cool" pmsl !!!
soon knocked that way of thinking out of him (not literally) and made him buy a feeder rod lol

with me its a game of trial and error because you cannot be sure where the fish are feeding unless theres obvious signs. winter they generally stay around the bottom and the opposite in summer but thats not always the case and in some cases depends on the species. I would fish the bottom or just above if the weed is bad, then just go shallower until you star getting the bites. when I have took my lad to a lake full of sivers I generally on fish to about two foot and just trickle in maggots
