Novice needing Help

I'm new to inland coarse fishing as i have been sea fishing mostly i have recently bought some inland tackle e.g rod,reel and some floats and little hooks but i'm a confused on breaking strain on line, The line is 6pounds is all right for fishing on my local canal (The Stroud Water at Thrupp)

any advice would be very useful fish 3

I dont know the water, but i'd say 6lbs would be fine, when i am fishing similar waters i would sometimes go as light as 4lbs but then again in NI and ROI we dont have carp in our canals!

as you gain experience you'll fish even lighter! i generally fish 3lb bs with a weaker bottom.
