First Time night fishing.

Hi I was thinking about trying night fishing at my local lake. However, I have my basic kit and nothing like bait alarms or even a bivvi.

if i fish as normal, ie on the bottom with normal baits as i would in the day. will i catch fish. I have a head torch and was thinking of using bell pegs or luminous snal lights on the rod tips...

is it worth a try......

Re: First Time night fishing.

Firstly respect to you for night fishing in this without a bivvi !
The same baits will work yes.
As for indication if your staying up use clip on star lights on the tip of if you spend a bit more you can get some tritium ones which glow for years.

As for noise indication i would get some cheap alarms, Ive seen some for no more than a tenner, but if not you could use bells or a coin pinning the line to a tin, Im sure theres loads more old school methods to try also

Heres some usefull tips also

Forceps
Unhooking matt
head torch
warm clothes
water proofs
decent landing net
FLASK (most important lol)

Make sure you are fully prepared before dark ie,

Bivvy set up and stable
designated unhooking area is set up
be aware of any hazards which might not be visible at night
make sure all your kit is to hand , torch, forceps scales etc.

Re: First Time night fishing.

I would recommend fishing late into the night a couple of times first just to see how you get on i.e 1-2am...then if you like and find things ok, do a full night...Just my opinion, as the first time I went night fishing with just my brolly I was caught up in a little storm which at the time felt like a tsunami...it wasn't a very nice experience and put me off night fishing for a while...

Maddison has put together a good list of essentials there mate, make sure you have it all to hand or you'll end up stressing yourself out and won't enjoy your fishing.

Hewy

Re: First Time night fishing.

Maddy gives some good tips there ... you need to remember if you aren't comfy you won't be enjoying it and it will affect your fishing .
It's dark by 6 so i guess you could try and evening session till say midnight ..
you can never have too many clothes and remember once the sun disappears it gets bloody cold fairly rapidly .
I know we all sound like your mother but its important to be prepared for whatever comes your way , and overtime you will build up the neccessary gear you need.

Re: First Time night fishing.

Don't do it, or go with an experienced angler this time of the year. This time of the year you are asking for trouble, it will put you off night fishing and could end up being a fatal experience

Good on you for being keen, but leave it until next summer mate

I was just about to say something along those lines... you will want to have a bit of experience in a warmer month rather than throwing yourself in at the deep end and going now approaching winter.

Re: First Time night fishing.

I think everyone agrees with that.

Despite few late evening fishing, I don't feel that I am ready for proper overnight fishing. Finish it like 23.00 or 00.00. At least it will give you enough energy to drive back home.

Re: First Time night fishing.

I fish most Friday nights, I have all the gear for it and I have felt the cold. Even fishing up to midnight at this time of the year without a decent shelter, cooker and clothing, you are asking for trouble, the temperature can drop so quick especially if the windy and rain moves in

Be patient and save up for the right gear for next year.

What species are you targeting anyway?

Darrell

Re: First Time night fishing.

The guy is nearly 40 years old and unlike us shore anglers walking a mile out into the unknown in big surf and dangerous rocky outcrops im pretty sury Kingy is just talking about trying his local water
I'm sure he atleast has the ability to say ' bugger this its freezing ' and just pack up

However,

I am in full agreement that for the best experience , that travelling with all the correct equipment is undoubtedly a far better approach than just 'sucking and see' ..

If we lived in Eastern Europe and minus 25 weather or the Savannah where a lion might eat you at night then perhaps i would advise againt fishing
