I have caught most of my Roach on the float either trotting a stick in streamy glides on streams or rivers in the early mornings and late evenings or on stillwaters fishing a waggler near to lillies or rushes or even in open water at times.

On rivers I tend to look for streamy glides especially glides near to reedbeds but on stillwaters Roach can usually be caught almost anywhere on the float using Caster, Breadflake, Maggots and other common baits; using hooklengths from around 12oz up to around 3lb and hooks between size 22 and size 16 or bigger depending on the bait you are using. but Large Roach are often more difficult to find unless you are fortunate.

On my local stream the Larger Roach seem to be caught on Breadflake, Caster or small Redworm trotted on 1.7lb to 3lb hooklengths close to Reedbeds. In fact every Roach of 1.5lb or over that I have caught on my local stream so far has been caught close to a reedbed.

On my local Canal the Larger Roach seem to be caught on Caster or Breadflake or Breadpaste at around dusk in the quieter stretches near to over hanging trees and bushes or fishing Caster over a small bed of Hemp and/or caster on top of the far shelf.

Every venue can be different and the most productive method and bait on one water may be completely different on another water; and although the float is my most productive Roach method so far; the leger can often prove to be the best method to use with quality Roach being caught on other baits sometimes meant for other species.

The 1lb 14oz Roach in the picture below was caught on a 7mm halibut pellet meant for Chub tight against near side rushes.
