| Reel Care Just got my self two Shimano st 10000s and I was wondering what is the best way to maintain the reels? Obviously oiling and cleaning comes to mind but what types of oil and how often ? I don't want to start chucking oil on if its going to attract debris and clog up. Apologies If this has been covered before Cheers Mad ![]() __________________ Species 2011.. | Re: Reel Care WD 40 is a silicon based product not a lubricant if you wash and dry your reels after use then give them a light spray they will be preserved and easier to clean next time. On the principal of if it aint broke dont fix it there is no real need to service modern reals more than once a year just keep em clean and keep an eye on them especialy the bale roller |

| Re: Reel Care When I was a lot younger I made the mistake of using WD40 on an old BlackCat centrepin and ruined the bearings. As it dries it leaves a sticky film which clogs up and stops the bearings from working properly. however after a lot of work I did eventually get it running even though it has never since run as smooth as it did before. It is ok to use WD40 for cleaning off old grease & oil from other moving parts as long as you can wipe it off afterwards before you re-oil or re-grease the reel with normal oil or grease. I personally wouldn't put WD40 anywhere near my reels. Nowerdays I either use Sewing Machine oil or 3 in 1 Oil on most of my reels; although I occasionally use a good thin grease on one or two of my fixed spool reels. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |

| Re: Reel Care WD 40 has been developed as an insulator and water repellant for electrical applications that is why it starts your car on a damp day. Using it on bearings or to clean things is madness as it leaves a protective coat when dry stopping oil or grease getting where you need it. If sprayed sparingly over the body of a reel it acts like a polish and protects the cases. To much and you indeed get a sticky mess. It is also favoured by match fishers as an attractor for dogfish. |
