mobile fishing van?

hi, I'm thinking about setting my own business up. Selling everything to do with fishing from bait to rods. I will appeal to all aspects of angling. i was just wondering if there was any other mobile tackle vans like mine around.

kind regards Good Tackle.

Re: mobile fishing van?

I knew of a guy in Norfolk who started out selling bait and basic tackle from out of a caravan (but it was static) and over the years the business got bigger and bigger until he had a supermarket selling everything from food to clothes, fishing tackle to sporting goods.

I also know of a guy in Wales who has converted his living room into a tackle shop, you literally knocked on his front door and went into the living room whilst the rest of his family were watching TV etc in the next room - rather bizzare but it worked.

I'm not sure what the benefit of being mobile is though? If you are just going to park up next to likely fishing venues than you are reliant of people having not bought their bait etc before going and as they would be reliant on you being there at the same time as they were it's unlikely that many would take the risk. If you are going to deliver your stuff to peoples door than that's great but it's going to prove very costly and time consuming for you and I can't see it being a viable business plan.

Re: mobile fishing van?

I don't know if it is still there; but at Stanborough Lake in Welwyn Garden City (which is very popular both with match anglers and carp anglers) there was a mobile tackleshop that set up in the car park every weekend which did a fairly good trade selling all types of tackle and bait.

If you can find a similar water where you can ply your trade then you might make a living out of it but unless you can setup by at least one good fishery then I suspect it may be a bit hard for you to make it pay, but best of luck anyway, nothing ventured nothing gained but do your homework and your business plan first before you start else it may turn into a disaster.

I hope you do well in your venture.

theres nothing like this down south east , but seems a good idea might take a while to get known - think people may like it, not sure up your way but if you decide to go fishing on a sunday afternoon theres nowhere open to get any bait or anything, sure if ou were to park up near a main sea fishing area, especially nights and weekends you would do a roaring trade, how many of us have gone out had a good session but couldnt stay any longer as youve used all your bait or lost loads of tackle, sure we have all done it - could also speak to all the clubs and be there at their comps -
good luck

Re: mobile fishing van?

I like the idea, you could have a set route, like a bus?
I would think that rods may not be the way to go, esp on the security side of things.
A wide range of baits would be good, but some may need refridgeration which could be tricky to get right.
The small things may go well, esp hooks etc.

what you want is a old ice van so you can use the fridges to keep bait fresh

Re: mobile fishing van?

selling bait at popular venues like chesil and especially out of hours is a great idea - even lok in the angling press for major comps .. otherwise its like the guys say and get a 'pitch' at a decent water and try your luck... with regards to tackle you want to stock consumables like mono, leads, tip lights, sets of feathers etc not major items !

Re: mobile fishing van?

you would need to be where people knew they could depend on finding you. I woud not set out fishing on the hope I would find the tackle shop open, ( or there in your case! ). Get regular pitches, get some regular customers, it is the only way to build a business.

You might want to supplement your income by doing mail order too.

Re: mobile fishing van?

GOOD IDEA!! I may set up my own! ;-) im with others on here mate, bait, bait, bait! esp live bait! hate having to treck to my local shop for maggots etc! i buy other stuff in bulk, pellets, mix etc,etc as they dont go 'off' for an age! however you would deffo need to have a route so anglers could rely on you being a a certain place at a certain time, If i was going fishing and was expecting to buy maggots for instance and you wasent there, i would never rely or buy from you again! good idea mate! stick at it!
