Which Reel?

A week ago I took my nephew fishing for the first time and he really enjoyed it and was pretty good at it. I'd like to take him more often and get him into it more so I was thinking of getting him some gear.

I have a rod that he can have which will be fine for silvers and the odd small Carp but I'm in two minds about what reel to get him.

I bought my wife a cheap reel a couple of years ago in the hope she would get into fishing but fishing isn't for her and so I have an Abu Garcia Cardinal which I think is a 103RD (only paid £30 for it) and doesnt really get used anymore.

However it is sometimes (although admittedly rarely) useful to have a spare reel for float and light ledgering so I'm considering the possibility of buying another reel anyway and giving one of them to my nephew.

I'm also going to be taking out a subscription to Improve Your Coarse Fishing magazine and noticed that for the next 3 days if I take out a subscription with them I could get for free a Shimano Catana 4000FA reel.

Anyone know which of these two reels is the better/which would be most suited to a complete beginner? I'm not bothered which one I keep as I wouldn't use either one often and have a very nice and very expensive float reel that I would always want to use first.
