were to start.

hi all,
new to the forum so little intro, im paul, 18 and from darlington.

always thought fishing looked like a bit of a laugh and something that would be especially nice in the summer, decided lately that ide like to give it a try but havent a clue how to get started.

basically i need some advice on lisences ect and also on things like rods, good beginer rod will do me, not looking for anything special because next month im going on holiday, at the moment just looking for something cheep that i can get out there with and give it a go then after my holiday i can buy everything else i will be needing.
also as a rough estimate, how much would you say ide be looking at just as a starting point to get rod ect so that i can just go for a few days out. i mean things like bait boxes so on can wait, an old packed lunch box or something will do for a few days untill after i come back and can buy everything else

so yeah any advice warmly welcomed.

thanks

oh and if this is in the wrong place sorry and any mods feel free to move

i reckon you can basically spend as little as you want - a rod n reel combo for 30 quid will get you fishing comfortably - the only other thing you might need is a landing net but even thats optional !
basic hooks, weights line etc can be added for another tenner then a couple of banksticks/rod rests and your looking at 50 quid
google is your friend when it comes to looking for cheap rod and reel combos

Re: were to start.

what kinda fishing you after ? lake, river ,sea ?
sea fishing doesnt require any form of license but river fishing does - you will need a rod lisence for any freshwater and usually a day ticket or permit to fish the lake or stretch of river
a 3 piece rod between 10 and 12 foot will do for most types of fishing and with rods you basically get what you pay for...avoid telescopic rods like the plague as with rods from the likes af aldi and poundland !
not much clued up on coarse fishing gear anymore but prices for rods and reels have come down as technology advances and decent tackle can be purchased relatively cheap with brand like shakespeare, daiwa, drennan etc being good quality !
with the reel you want to spend as much as you can and go for one with lots of ball bearings as this helps when pulling in fish or if yo uwanna do some spinning ..
check e-bay for good second hand gear - if you see summit you fancy post a link back here and we can tell you if its any good or not ( or i can anyway )

you deffo need one and they are obtainable from the local post office
If you wanna fish without one , the risk is that a bailiff will take your kit off you and you could also end up in court ..

Re: were to start.

Biggest bit of advise I'd give you is to be humble and patient. This forum has some of the most sharing and helpful people you will find so it might be an idea not to have a crack at them for not responding quickly.

OK lecture over.

A license is a bit like the one you need to legally drive a car. It allows you to drive a car but doesn't allow you to just help yourself (legally) to someone else's just because you like the look of it.

This is where day tickets, club memberships and syndicates come in. These allow you to have access to the car , though only of you are licensed. Not all clubs check for licenses though so that's where my analogy begins to break down. As for not having a license, it's just not worth the risk. Bailiffs have the power to permenantly take your kit. It's not like driving a mates car uninsured where he can just turn up, show his documents, pay the fine and get his car back. If bailiffs take your gear it is gone UNLESS you can prove you were licensed and they took it wrongly. So a club provides the car, it's up to you to make sure you have a license.

Fishing without a license is a criminal offense too so it could bugger up your job prospects.

Depending on how serious you are about having a go at fishing I'd recommend calling in to your local tackle dealer or finding a local club. You might even find someone here who might help.

I reckon , if you are half way serious, a couple of hundred quid at most to get an OK rod and reasonable reel.

We're not here to give you a hard time, just be patient with us old buggers, we can't move as fast as you young uns. Welcome to the forum, I hope you do get involved with this great sport and stick around.

Pete.

Re: were to start.

cheers for the replys,

lisence i had a look on the internernet and on the enviroment agency it came up with this clicky

now i have no idea, as far as i can see i should buy a full season lisence? because i am not under 16, 65+ or disabled.
right?

i will be fishing in the river teese and anywere else that is local to darlington, would that mean i need the £27 lisence or the £72 lisence? i think the £27 but honistly have no idea.

going to have a look at a few rods on ebay now see whats out there

cheers for any info

Re: were to start.

It's what you intend to fish for and how you do it that counts. So if you are after chub and roach fishing for them in a manner consistent with chub and roach fishing and in a mixed fishery then it's the £27 one. If you SAY you are fishing for roach but are using a slamon rod and gear then you run the very real risk of getting nicked IF a bailiff catches you.

By all means have a look at some rods to get an idea of what's out there , I'd very strongly recommend you come back on here before you bid though. It's very easy to buy lots of "bargains" that turn out to be useless.
