| Re: Catch my first barbel I dont have loads of experience catching barbel but I would say adapt to suit your venue. I fish the trent which is deep and quite fast flowing. I use a heavy feeder rod with a bait runner reel as the barbel can take you rod in if you are not careful. the reel is loaded with 12lb mono leading to a 3 to 4 oz feeder filled with small pellets plugged with ground bait with a 2- 3 foot hook length baited with pellet or something similar, the idea being the current creates a nice stream of feed past your hook bait. some people free line luncheon meat and let it roll with the current as the barbel find this less suspicious than a stationary bait. I think key feeding times for barbel would be dusk and dawn as low light conditions give them more confidence to feed. I would go for cheese sarnies and a can of lager in the summer dont do tea or coffee lol __________________ Species 2011.. Common carp,Mirror carp,Pike,Rudd,Dace,Eel,Bream,Perch,Roach,Barbel, Chub |

| Re: Catch my first barbel I would agree with all of the above, except cheese sweats on a hot day, so I go for a nice cornish pasty, and coffee every time for me, strong and black because it can be a long wait for Barbel. you need to keep a eye on the rod tip, barbel will often play with a bait, you do not always get the end hooping round and off they go, and I would advise going gentle on the reeling in, I remember one fish that took the bait, and then all of a sudden the line went solid, so mouch so that I thought I was snagged up , but I just held it for a minute and then it started to plod upstream, and this was on the fast flowing river severn near warwick. Good luck on the quest, Barbel are a hard beast to master. __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards. |

Really good advice above from Mithrandir and Maddison_Twatter. Heres a link to another post on this forum which I hope will also be of use to you: <barbel fishing> Also have a look at these two articles which may also be of help to you: <Your first barbel> is aimed at someone wishing to catch ther first Barbel from a small river or stream. <choosing a swim for barbel on a small river or stream> contains a few tips when choosing swims. Best of luck with your first Barbel and tight lines Keith (BoldBear) Just a quick note: I think that maybe this post should be in the Barbel section of the forum __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
