Re: What changes i would like to see more smiles and friendliness from the 'carp' boys.... countless times i have turned up at a lake at the crack of dawn, and walked past 'carpers' who get up and just stare wildly at you going past, like they've never seen a human before! this isnt a dig at carpers but just an observation!! cheer up boys!!

Re: What changes good point about the licence and lack of knowhow by first time or casual anglers who dont care about the fish. Would be an idea as mentioned about fishery owners/managers/bailiffs checking for rod licences. no licence no fishing. Also the EA bailiffs can't be everywhere at same time so maybe they could have nominated regular mature licence holders to do some checking for them. As for inexperienced anglers we can all do our bit as Mr-G did and help out where we can with them. Maybe a few more schools or clubs to have angling classes. you dont need to even go to a river or lake to teach the basics. i'm going to give my 2 kids casting lessons in the garden and my daughter is just getting to grips with using a disgorger.

Re: What changes Some of the blame for first time anglers having heavy tackle could lie with the media. You just got to walk into a newsagents and look on the shelf for the angling mags and what do you see???? YES thats right....HUGE fish, mostly carp. Even the tv shows more often than not show anglers catching big fish, so are these inexperienced people thinking WOW!!!! i want to catch one of those and so, associate that big fish need big gear and get the strongest rod, reel, line and so on thinking this is what you need to be able to land such huge specimens. They see the pictures but dont read the report or anything else but just run down to the nearest water expecting to catch 40lb carp. So as mentioned before (and has been reported as being done by a couple of people) its upto local experianced anglers to watch out for these people and point out the error of there ways and educate them and get them on the right track so they can enjoy fishing to the full.

Re: What changes Excellent thread Nick It is hard enough getting the youngsters to spend time fishing let alone proposing that they do a test, no test will prove if a youngster has the skills in fish care etc...It is down to the more experienced anglers. I believe that the fishery owners should be made to do a test, and are then checked annually to ensure that they are following procedures. The Carp pool owners are raking it in, its about time they put some effort back into the sport. Just checking tackle, watching and giving some advise will help with fish welfare and help the youngsters catch more. I will not fish a Carp pool, I am fed up of every other Carp having a badly damaged mouth etc... due to the fish not being played and handled correctly My club, Ely Beet, the bailiffs and regular anglers check rod licences and day/season tickets regularly every day, I even text them if there are anglers about I dont know. this is because the bailiff earns from the day ticket but most importantly they will check out what tackle etc... they are using. their rules are simple but I have seen them ask anglers to leave because they dont have the correct tackle. The regular anglers are good at giving advise and pointing anglers in the right direction whether they are young or experienced I do agree with comment made about the Carp anglers (not all of them) being secretive and grumpy, I can understand that they are putting in the hours and dont want anyone else catching the fish they are targeting but there are manners, I prefer fishing on my own but I will have a chat, some banter, even share a cuppa and give some advise, its part of angling...well I think so I took my two boys and one of their mates fishing the over week, what a nightmare, three boys with poles fishing a stunning lake stuffed with small Rudd. They caught hundreds of them, I was totally knackered when I got home, moving between swims helping unhooking the fish and untangling the rigs. I hooked three Carp (approx 4lb each) which the youngsters all had a go in playing them in. The pleasure I got from seeing their faces when they got home telling their mums what they had caught and when can we go again makes it all worth while. It is a shame my boys mates dad wont take him even thought they are often at their nana's place which is only two hundred yard from the ponds. why did the dad buy him a rod for Christmas.....it needs to go in the bin anyway because they brought it from Argos and it no good for anything Litter is a issue, especially when someone has a crap and leaves the deposit there, tossers Darrell

Re: What changes I think what you said earlier about people new to the sport having to learn them self is the "sad" truth because i had to learn my self how to fish but i think the best thing to do is just buy a DVD or watch a few programes. I learnt most of the things i know off the internet and fishing films like the Matt Hayes ones they helped me ALOT
