Re: What changes

for number 5.....

do you not think if a fish is played correctly on the right kind of tackle it will lay there calm on the matt

i seem to find its the same style of people who stand and hold fish ect they also have 3lb + tc rods with 20lb line and are fishing for carp upto 20lb max and they are the same people who have carp flapping around on the matt and they end up laying across the fish to keep it still

Have you seen a grass carp out of water

Re: What changes

no to be honest.....never fished a lake with one in? i dont think

i do however like i say see alot of people with big rods big reels 20lb line size 4 hooks and they lift and winch.....

i use much lighter gear and play the fish too the net and never have a problem with fish flapping on a unhooking mat

Re: What changes

could not imagine why some one would use 20lb line .Lack of angling skills springs to mind ,

Grass carp mate go crazy on the bank , it is very difficult to keep them under control on the bank

proper angling

bit hard for me at times , don't think i could reach the distance , but i do fish with a multitude of rods and test curves

Any way back on track , but a good point you made .

Why do people feel the need to got with broom handles . is this because they have seen johnny whatsit in the king carper mag useing them /
every lake you go on you see people with more fire power than the army

Re: What changes

I too have caught Carp on 5lb to 11lb line but It works both ways though, I wouldn't dream of fishing a stream for Barbel on line of any less than 6lb and then only if the stream was relatively snag free and the Barbel were all less than 5lb in weight.

On more usual venues a minimum of 8lb line is more sensible and 10lb line is usually my choice on venues which have more snags and hold medium to large Barbel (or 11lb/12lb line in flood conditions when using heavier leads).
This is because as you know the Barbel will usually fight till it is totally exhausted (unlike the average Carp) so you need to land it in as short a time as is feasible; therefore using a line that is too fine is equally as bad as using a line which is too strong for most other fish.

Re: What changes

What your saying there comes from experience ,
part of training should explain this ,
How many times do you see people roach fishing on 5lb line when half that tc would do ,
I have moved over to braid now for my barbel fishing i will admit , Plan is like you said get them in as soon as possible and as stress free as possible ,
Then give them plenty of time to recover before letting them swim off ,
for all my barbel fishing i now use a recovery sling like these ,
