About as much use as a chocolate fireguard mate....
unless you live in a phone box and have storage issues i would stick to a nice two or 3 piece rod

Re: new to fishing - telescopic rods?

I Have used them in the past you either get one section collapsing into the lower section or the rod rings never stay lined up. If space is a problem get a good quality put together rod. I have a 12 foot six peice carp rod that i would not sell for any amount of money had it twelve years now. Telescopic rods are a waste of money mate. A decent pole may be an option for you, you can get a decent 6 metre version for around £50.

i have to agree the telescopic rods are a waste of time you might as well set your money on fire they might be good for saving space but a 2 piece rod wont take up that much room either.

Re: new to fishing - telescopic rods?

If i had to pick only one rod it would have to be my Diawa PMS . Had it years and used it for all sorts. It's great for tench and carp. OK for dropping down for roach (though not it's ideal use) , super for chub. When I've caught more than two barbel on it I'll let you know how it handles.

As for telescopics I have used them when I am flying abroad or want to be super mobile (ie pub crawling round the isle of wight as I did a few years ago. Mine was OK but not at all robust. The rod rings corroded quite quick and I suddenly lost an eye (from the rod not me) and an eye lining.

I think I might still buy one again for atrip to turkey this year but I'm not expecting much from it.

As for rod selection, find a decent tackle shop and ask. Then before you buy come on here and ask about what they (on the forum) recommend.

.
I used to use telescopics when nothing else was available, but as there are now many types of multipiece travel rods, nobody need ever buy a telescopic again!

Google "travel rods" and you will find a wide choice.
