Re: Whats Going On?

HA ha ,lots of good advice here about the way the tackle shops take us all for a ride aqns and catching us Anglers ,
My philosophy (big word for today) is keep it simple ,and enjoy your fishing ,I don't care whether I'm catching 2oz roach ,just as long as I'm out by the water fishing.

PS whats a bolie

Re: Whats Going On?

Does anyone remember the Bob Nudd 'Maggi-Pult'?. It was a device for loose feeding maggots one handed while you held your pole in the other hand.
The maggots were propelled out in an elastic propelled cup that made a loud bang which made every fish in your swim run for cover.
Bob Nudd made a video demonstrating how good it was.

I bought one of them with one of Bobs videos and it has sat in the back of my shed ever since I used it just twice.

So even the better anglers end up endorsing some rubbish gear occasionally.

As for Ivan Marks, I sat by him twice while he fished matches at Stanborough lake and you couldn't wish to meet a nicer guy. I can't remember him endorsing everything that he used either.

Ivan once broke two of his floats to fashion into a float suitable for me to use in the shallow river running behind him while he was fishing the lake in a match, he also gave me a pint of casters to use, and on another occasion the match organizer asked him if he would be willing to talk a very young angler through what he was doing and why, which he did willingly all through the match.

He would talk to anyone and was always interested in how others fished whether they were carp anglers or match fishermen, he was a true gentleman.

Re: Whats Going On?

Great story bear. If i were to meet any famous angler it would have to be mick brown. No fancy rigs traditional stuff he is in my opinion the better half of the matt and mick combination. Matts great as a presenter but mick makes the programmes as he is just you average bloke doing what he loves best.

Re: Whats Going On?

i totally agree with the main point being made here. newbies to the game are being taught how to go after the biggest fish ever first, after they've spent a weeks wages on the bait for the trip!!!!
my pb's (25 yrs fishing) for course fish are great with some being specimen fish, and i tell you now, i have never spent over £15 on bait for one session. my average spend is £6.
it takes lots and lots of practice to perfect your 'own' rig and tactics, and i have thoroughly enjoyed working out what needs to be done to catch my specimen fish, something the new generation, i feel will miss out on!

Re: Whats Going On?

There are far too many so called tutorials in the angling press that are tackle, and bait orientated and designed to make the novice think that by spending out a small fortune, They are going to catch the mother of all monsters on their very first trip out. At the end of the day these so called experts (expert defined is a two sylable word. EX a useless item that no one wants. SPURT a drip under pressure) are being paid extreamly well for their endorsements.
To put this into context with my main passion in life. I did not go and buy a race replica of Agostinis bike to learn on. I had a bsa bantom. Today with the experience gained through time I ride a monster that is more than capable of 180mph.
To any novices reading this. Your personal experience and word from the bank or beach is far more reliable than the 150 quid rod that matt hayes tells you will catch fish.

Re: Whats Going On?

What you said reminded me of a time a few years back when a friend of mine and I were enjoying a morning in a top trout stream. We were quietly working our fly lines and doing well, when another gent came stomping around a bend of the stream. He planted himself between my friend and I and started questioning us about how we were doing and what kind of flies we were using. I told him what I was using and he popped open a well stocked box of flies that he had no doubt just picked up at one on the area shops. Then after several minutes of struggling with tying up, he started beating the water. I noted that he was wearing and packing at least a couple thousand dollars worth of nifty "stuff". After a short time, his cell phone rang and after a reather loud conversation, he told my friend and I that he didn't think the fish were hungry and sloshed away. My friend and I looked at each other and he said "some people just don't get it".
