fishing pond - how big?

I am a beginner to fishing but I am lucky enough to have an area of land adjacent to my house where I could create a pond. It would be ornamental and for private use only but if I wanted to put some carp in it how big would it need to be, to be worthwhile? For say one or two people to fish in? The land could accommodate something around 10 by 15 metres. And how deep would it need to be?

I have done searches but information online varies wildly. I appreciate the need to check the soil/substrate etc and the planning position, but if the pond won't be big enough there is no point progressing to that.

Re: fishing pond - how big?

You could dig a 1/2 acer lake and 6foot deep. Proberly could put 200 carp + other fish depending on size.

But its very expencive todo.

Re: fishing pond - how big?

Thanks Ben but I'm not thinking of anything like that size. I'm not talking about a commercial operation just a private pond, but one big enough to hold a few carp or similar. 15 x 10 metres seems pretty big when I pace it out, but is it big enough for fish to live in and more important will there be any challenge fishing in it?

Thanks Tim

I know next to nothing about building your own pond, but that does sound very small mate. There would certainly be no waiting about for bites lol

Re: fishing pond - how big?

Hmmm I suppose you are right. Unless I only put one fish in it!

Do we reckon half an acre is the minimum viable size then?

Thanks for your replies btw

Absolutely, and its basically all the land I have including the bit with the house on it, so its out of the question even if I could afford the construction costs, which I cant.

What about a quarter acre which would be, say, 40 metres by 25 metres? At two metres deep average that's over 2000 cubic metres of water or around 450,000 gallons... ... it will take ten years to fill!
