plumbing the depth

Hi fellas only been fishing for a while and am resonably comfortable with everything thus far but plumbing the depth still throws me , i know the principal and roughly way to go bout it but as i dont get out as much as id like due to other commitments i hate the thought that i am ruining my fishing by not doing it right so her it would put my mind at rest to knw if im doing it right or wrong . Firstly when im fishing the waggler i have loaded wagglers.how do i setup by this i mean i attach my float do i then add the remaining shot that is on the float to cock it before attaching my plummet or do i just lock float in place as it is with float stops (which i plan to use this season )then add the remaining shot after , also say the float is 4aaa and i use the 4aaa around the float when i then add the likes of no8,s , 6,s etc does this then affect the weight or do i need to incorporate them into the original shotting if you understand what i mean.
Secondly goin piking next week and want to try a float i have always legered deadbaits and have had fish to 18 1/2 lbs but again i jus want to knw correct way as again i think i knw but am not 100 percent , so say i arrive at the venue ive never fished how to i go about plumbing it , i plan to use a slider float with a stop knot , by this i mean the setup , i apologize if thse questions are silly but would really put my mind at ease to know when i go fishing i am not fishing at wrong depths and damaging my chances , appreciate any feedback , many thanks

Re: plumbing the depth

i normally do mine by using as a normal marker float set up mate , pull/wind down the float to the lead after casting , then feed off until the float rises ,
then i measure on pike line the same distance including the treble and tie a stop knot ,
i normally under set it by 6in
