Re: need some help on my location

i fish canals all the time and tend to use really light tackle the bubbles you describe sound like fish in the water but cant be certain without seing your location any way try this ,set up a matchrod with small reel 6lb line ,attach a five number4 float and lock it 3feet up your line with 2 bb this will help it sit in the water at any depth ,add a hook to nylon (pre tied leaders you want 3lb line with 18 hook )and add a single swan shot 4 inchs from your hook .this s
et up is so well balanced and really light you cant fail to spot bites on it

having now seen your location and may i add its quite beutiful (i would give my left arm for a spot like that but then i wouldnt be able to fish lol)any way i would clear a fence panel and build a small jetty keep it on your land tho ,fish tight in against that tree at the bottom of the garden just touching bottom use a mixture of red and white maggot only using a single maggot at a time ,or out into that little bay away from the reed beds (they hide perch and pike and roach wont go near them )or go for the perch using a very small live bait you may get pike so use a spinning rod something that can handle the strain tight lines

Re: need some help on my location

That looks like a smashing bit of canal and you should count yourself very lucky to live with that at the end of your garden.

The first thing I would do is watch for someone who seems to be catching well and take a stroll over to him (making sure to keep low and quiet so that you dont spook any fish in front of him) and pick his brain.

The sort of things you should be asking is:
Is it a club water and if so where can you obtain a day permit or club membership?
How often does he fish there?,
What has he caught?
What types and size of fish are in there?
What methods does he find best there (waggler?, ledger?, feeder?, Pole?, Whip?)
What baits has he found to be best for the different species in there?

Don't hassle him and bombard him with too many questions but if you explain that you are new to the sport and want to know how best to approach the fishing in this water he should be only too willing to spill the beans as long as he is not fishing a match that day.

I would also recommend a talk with the local tackleshop who should be more than willing to help you with information about the stretch of canal and how to catch the various species of fish resident there.

Personally in the absence of any prior information I would start off with a 3BB to 5BB waggler shotted as in the picture below set to just overdepth with approx two to three inches laying on the bottom using 3.5lb to 4lb reel line and a size 18 or size 20 hook to 2lb or 2.7lb nylon hooklength.

At this time of year I would use 'Pinkies' which are a smaller type of maggot which win plenty of canal matches catching most fish in the canal; including Tench, Bream, Chub, Perch, Roach and gudgeon, or try Caster on the hook which are the chrysalis of the normal sized maggot, or if there are some quality Roach in there try a piece of breadflake.
If however you find that there is a good head of Carp in there then you can step up the strength of your tackle and fish for them.

As you live right beside the canal you have an excellent chance of being able to drag a large hole in the weed using a rake-head attatched to some rope which you can fish at your leisure and which the anglers on the far bank can't get to.

Anyway Good luck and tight lines.

don't forget to tell us how you get on and what you catch it looks a superb venue.

BB

Re: need some help on my location

Think i best come and fish it for you lol.
I would trickle some bait in a few separate swims
corn, hemp crushed boilies, chopped worms , maggots , bread mash, chopped luncheon meat etc etc Dont over do it
give it a few days then repeat .
eventually the fish will find the bait.
Fish it with a small float and small hooks

Re: need some help on my location

If it backs on to your garden you might own the rights anyway (check your freehold or tenancy agreement). Apart from that if you are in your garden then how the hell are the bailiffs going to check anyway GET ORF MY LANND! You still need a rod license though, it just is not worth the fine. Seriously though I would make all attempts to find out if a club does own the rights and join. If it's Wolvehampton then they are only £15 a year anyway. It's better not to sind them up as the information flow could well just get cut off if you do. Does the canal back up to your fence or is there a path or something the other side ? It might be worth draggin the weed with a rake on a rope in the summer to clear a small area out. leave it so there's weed between you and the far bank and feed it up. That way you can get in there without some clever b@gger from the other bank fishing in to it.

Whereabouts are you anyway? I live near Doodley (though I am a Cardiff boy) but did on newhampton road for a while . It might help determine who what and the rest.

Best bet is to check with a local tackle shop.
