| Largest Freshwater fish in Africa I came here wondering if anyone could help me figure out what fish is the largest freshwater fish on the continent of Africa? I know of the Nile Perch which is one of the largest if not the largest but there seems to be some confusion to whether it is the largest. Alot of people refer to it as the largest freshwater fish accesible to anglers and im not quite sure what that means could any experts explain that to me? But even if the Nile Perch is the largest freshwater in Africa could anyone tell me some other big freshies in Africa? thanks |

| Re: Largest Freshwater fish in Africa Hi Rockdude, I work in Africa and from my experience and from what i understand there are a good few 'big' freshwater species in Africa. The Goliath Tiger Fish is well worth a look at, like the usual Tiger fish but on steroids. Found in the Congo it takes a bit of getting to but when you reach the right streches you are in for some serious serious big fish fishing africa style. Another huge fish (not sure on exact records) and quite fishable with serious fights are the catfish or 'black barbel' which inhabit many of the rivers in southern africa especially. I have caught some huge specimens, getting on to 4/5ft and im sure near the 80/100 pound mark. There is also the Vundu, this a serious fish and are also found in many rivers in southern africa and can get well over 100pounds. I have yet to land a Vundu but have had many smash my 20+pound line without so much as a thankyou for the free meal. In short there are some great 'big' freshwater fish to target in africa. if you know where to go and have a good guide you can have some awesome fish. check out www.busangasafari.co.uk for some of my old mans favourite fishing destinations in africa (he's a tour operator). |
