Few questions and am I using the right tackle?

Hello all,

Have done a bit more research and buying of bits and bobs since my last post so naturally have looooads more questions, some you might consider stupid but please bear with me, all advice is appreciated!

I have got my rod, reel, and line but only a starter pack of assorted spinning lures - I'm hoping to try and fish for trout, pike and perch - am I going the right way about this? What other fish might I catch, and do I need specific lures for specific fish?

I've found loads of places to fish in and around Sheffield & South Yorkshire i.e. Ladybower reservoir, Damflask, Wire mill dam etc. I'm a bit confused about these ponds and fisheries. I understand some operate on a catch and release policy, I get that. But do any allow you to keep fish for eating - if so what's the common name for this (as in the opposite of catch and release)? Do you have a 'bag limit'?

Following on from that, what species are suitable for eating. I know pike and perch and eaten in other parts of the globe but are good eating over here, is it 'done'? What other fish can be caught and eaten over here?

I'm sure I had alot more questions but will leave it there for now. Buying my license tomorrow and hopefully will get out to Ladybower this weekend and see if I have what it takes...Hmmn....

Thanks for any help!

Rich

ok you can eat perch but its not worth taking anything under 3lb really (not much meat)and on some fisheries you can keep fish you catch i fish an old quarry pit thats full of trout and you pay by the hour £4.50,and you can keep a max of two fish at a cost of 5quid each but you can feed three people on one fish they are massive, and you can eat pike as well but its really boney and can taste muddy so detox the fish first(what you do is find a clear running water and set up a bath tub or somthing large enough for the fish and rig up an inlet pipe and an overflow pipe so the water runs into the bath and out again like a minnie stream and feed the fish corn for two weeks it will cleanse the fish and give it a nice sweet flavour)

Oddgitt,

Pretty much all coarse fish are edible but as crocodile dundee says, they taste like @@@@! That and the fact that you are VERY likely to get chucked in the cut if someone spots you. Trout places are OK though as they are specifically stocked for the fish to be removed.

There's no such thing as a daft question so ask away.

I think a visit to a local tackle shop would always be my first line of advise.

Whatever happens, don't be scared to ask questions.

Re: Few questions and am I using the right tackle?

Thanks guys, I thought as much regarding the eating of fish; I only intend to catch Trout to eat (if I'm lucky) but it's handy to know these things. I will pop down to a tackle shop this weekend and see what advice I can get and money I can be liberated from! Think I'll just go with what I've got so far and see how it goes. I will update you on my success or lack of when I get the chance! Many thanks, Rich
