how to stock a lake and with what?

I am in the process of selling my house and have just been to view a property that has a lake on its grounds (just under 1/2 acre of water, not too sure of the depth) as far as i know, the lake has never been stocked with fish and i was just wondering how easy it would be to do? I have no ambition to open up a fishery or anything but it would be quite cool to be able to wet a line in something not salty every once in a while. what sort of fish is the easiest to manage with the smallest ammount of work?

also, this may be a really stupid question, but being only a sea fisherman i have no idea of the law on fishing still water. do i still need a license if i only fish on my own land? can an inspector walk on to private land to check?

TMH

Re: how to stock a lake and with what?

The first step would be to approach the Environment Agency Fisheries Management team.
They know if the water has Planning permission, then they will assess whether you could stock it.
I think you have to apply for a section 30. (don't quote me)
The paper work is quite heavy!
Then it should be plain sailing!

Don't be afraid of the EA they are there to help!

Re: how to stock a lake and with what?

cant believe i would have to pay the government for the privilage of catching fish that i have bought, that i would be returning to the lake in the grounds of the house that i would have paid stamp duty on with money that i had already paid the highest rate of income tax on.

just as well i'm an easy going bloke or i could get a bit annoyed by all this
