Hooking meats/cheese question Hi , I went to my local chub/barbel swim yesterday and had loads of bites but failed to hook anything. I was using cheese cubes for the chub and mattesons smoked pork sausage for the barbel , I reckon when I'm striking the bait just pulls out of the fishes mouth. How to I hook these baits while still leaving the hook exposed enough to set ? I tried using bread and caught a few little 1lb ish chub but cant get anything bigger on it as the littluns just pick it apart before the big ones sniff it out. Any help on this would be great as it's really frustrating seeing the fish but not being able to hook them. Cheers. P.S what I usually do is push the hook through the bait , turn it 45 degrees and then set the point back into the bait , with a blade of grass to stop it pulling through.

Re: Hooking meats/cheese question Try using a hair rig. that way when the fish spits the meat or cheese out the hook sets its self. Have a look at Dans Post Hair rigs __________________ Born to fish made to work

Re: Hooking meats/cheese question Brilliant , thanks alot for your help again. Just made my first hair rig and I'm well chuffed ! I'm guessing you use a swivel or just tie it back to your main line ?

Re: Hooking meats/cheese question Cheers , but after seeing how easy and satisfying they are to make yourself I don't think i'd buy them pre-made. Maybe it'll start getting annoying though and I may change my mind ! Ill give it a go when the weather picks up again. Up until now i've only ever used a very simple leger rig. Literally a swivel bomb leger , a shot to hold it and a size 6 hook. Hopefully the newly learnt sneaky tactics will outsmart the bigguns. Cheers for your help guys. ![]()

Re: Hooking meats/cheese question I have seen some special meat stops in the fox racks in my local tackle shop, they are meant to help meat stay on the hook, look like they might work.
