Has it really come to this?

I have just read our local, free angling paper"Freshwater Informer",this is a free one given out every month, although I do not see it every month.
All I read is about massive, almost grotesque fish complete with photos and tackle that must not only cost a fortune but take a small van to move around.
What has happened to the enjoyment of the lake or river bank where every fish large or small is a thrill to catch(I still think so anyway).I ask what does this mania after bigger and bigger fish say to any young folk who might want to start angling?Where is this leading to when it will soon need block and tackle to lift them out of the water?.
Perhaps I am missing something and yes,I agree each to their own but I wonder how many of these anglers have had such pleasures as many of us old anglers, such as quietly sliding a small rod out over a pool in a small steam, line hook and small worm only, catching 6-8oz brook trout or spinning for summer Perch,I could go on almost for ever but I hope I make my point here.

Re: Has it really come to this?

i have a love of all fishing but you must understand how much time is needed to be put in if you want to catch a biggie i go on lots of long sessions 2 , 3 or even 4 days at time for this you do need lots of stuff but i do agree with you i still go down the canal with a float rod and pint of maggots and love it i also agree with you about the kids they dont seem to any water craft skills they just chuck the biggest lead they have and hope but carp fishing is in vogue at the mo just pray that tench and barbel dont become trendy i dont think they could stand the mistreatment like carp can
