Just Starting & Need Help

I have just started fishing and need a little help. I currently have a rod and a pole ( only cheap ones but look to get better ones if i really get going with this) and I have no idea on where to start. I will be fishing on the Aire and Calder Navigation in leeds most of the time but would also like to fish in ponds at some time. Im not aiming on fishing for any particular fish at the minute but would like to catch fish of a decent size. What type of line, hooks and bait should i use aswell as what depth should i fish. Im a complete beginer so any help is appreciated.

well i would reccomed u start low for roach bream tench all littles one i would use 6 pound main line and then 4 lb hokk link and sike 16 and start with maggots u will catch

do you fish at the bottom middle or top of the canal? I can usually see fish jumping out of the water or swimming along the top when i walk the dog, but is this where you catch then?
