| Help Please Hi there always fancied fishing but never got round to it. Recently bought my first rod and reel, and like many other people have found that fishing isnt as straight forward i thought it would be . Id appreciate it if anyone could give me a general idea of what my equipment is suitable for. I know it can't be explained in a few paragraphs but im really baffled right now so any help at all will make the difference. My rod is an 8' spinning rod 10-30g and the reel is an okuma razor 40. I also bought a few lures etc and various hooks, weights and split shot. I fancy fishing for pike amongst other things but i don't want to break my rod. Any light shed on this will be greatly apreciated. Cheers. |

| Re: 8' spinning rod set your drag really low and wait until any fish you hook gets tired enough to be pulled in without your drag slipping. you will have a greater chance of losing your fish if it heads fo weed cover and and you havent got the ability to pull it out before it embeds but you definately won't break your rod . |

| Re: 8' spinning rod the 8ft rod should be fine, i would use 6-8lb line and a wire trace with the lures. The rod will be fine as long as you take your time, also if you have not fished for pike before go with someone who has. because unhooking a pike can be a little bit dangerous, be careful. Good luck as well __________________ Born to fish made to work |

| Re: 8' spinning rod Hi Slapsalmon, Although 23 people might view your posting they might be guests on the Forum and not registered members. I personally didn't read your thread until now, you posted on a Bank Holiday at 6.26 pm and you must remember that not all members who read your thread are capable of giving you an answer. I am a Charter Boat fisherman and haven't a clue about Pike fishing. Please be patient with us, we are a very friendly crowd and most of us know each other. Since joining the Forum I personally have never known an argument between any of the members, except for AndyG and myself, who are constantly arguing. I consider myself a better fisherman than him, he disagrees but who cares? I can outfish him anytime anywhere. | Re: 8' spinning rod Hi Slapsalmon, Had my first pike earlier this year on similar tackle to yours , and though only a jack it was exciting fishing ,so go for it . like Banana Steve I'd recommend finding an experienced piker to go with first time not only to help with the correct handling a good pike requires should you get lucky but also for tips on technique and location that should make a catch more likely........nothing adds to the enjoyment more than getting a bite. Some waters require you to have a landing net over a certain size to fish for pike in their waters so do check first. good luck. |
