| Hi, all. Right up front, I am totally new to fishing so if I'm asking dumb questions please excuse me! I'm moving to live aboard a narrowboat this June and will be mooring awhile around the top end of the Grand Union canal. I thought it might be nice to try some fishing! What type of fish are likely to be caught? Do you need a totally different rig to fish for carp, and what are the chances of catching any? What sort of rod/line/bait combo is best for general canal fishing? Any advice would be gratefully received. ![]() |

| Re: Total newbie canal fishing questions I prefer float fishing the canal, you can catch anything from rudd to tench. A standard 13ft match rod with 4lb line will suit most of your needs. There are some big carp, but will prob need to ledger, loose feed with particles and fish with a boilie or similar large bait. They tend to be hard to catch, but on the gu canal in leicester i have landed carp to 8lb(they go to 15lb plus) tench to 5lb bream to 4lb and roach to 1 1/2 lb, so it is worth fishing. good luck mate. If you are anywhere near leicester drop me a line if you would like to have a days fishing. |
