barbel help

Hi everyone, I am a new member.
I am just about to start fishing again and want to go after barbel and chub on the wlitshire and hampshire avon. Anybody got any advice on baits rigs and where to go on day ticket waters in the winter and summer.

many thanks

Re: barbel help

Welcome to the forum Beast

I would recommend the Stour/ Throop for barbel and chub, although the day ticket is not cheap £10 I think but there are some cracking berties and chub there.

Rigs/bait depends on the time of year and the venue.

When fishing for winter chub and barbel I would suggest trying trotting with maggots, small(ish) strong hooks 12-10, with about 5 maggots.

Mainline again depending on the venue, if snaggy 8-10 mainline.

At Throop you should get away with 6 or 8lb mainline.

If fishing in warmer months you can fish with the most common bait, halibut pellets on a hair rig or luncheon meat.

A smelly cheese paste is good for chub when the water is a bit coloured.
Chub are predators so has been known to been caught even on pieces of steak, small fish bait i.e. minnow, gudgeon etc.

Re: barbel help

other areas you could try
the avon at lacock and also limpley stoke which are amalgamated fishery waters and can be fished with a day ticket about 6 quid. Most tackle shops in the area sell these.

Yes you can, use a small maggot feeder on a running ledger but only put a dozen maggots in, you don't want to feed the fish in winter, just attracted them.

Here is a link where you find all the details:
