| Re: Varnishing split cane? When I restored an old split cane fly rod Matt, I used proper marine grade varnish. Not the stuff sold in DIY stores as Yacht varnish. You should be able to get some from a good ships chandlers. Don't use a brush to apply it as you will get runs. Dip your finger in the varnish & apply it thinly using your finger. Use at least three coats. Leave each coat to dry for at least a week, then, before applying further coats gently rub down with 0000 grade steel wool rubbing gently along the grain . Finish off the final coat with some quality wax polish. When stripping off the old varnish, i had better results using the flat edge of a razor blade rather than sandpaper which is time consuming & can scratch the wood. __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey... |

| Re: Varnishing split cane? Very good advice - BTW that "Yacht Varnish" isn't even waterproof! __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
