| I heard a whisper the other day that the Government wants to save money by selling off British Waterways Board. Any truth in the matter? |

| Re: British Waterways Board for sale? Greetings, The wife & I had an October time holiday in the Skipton area & in so doing this Co.Durham village dweller discovered another world, that of 'The World of Canals'. I was most impressed with the prevailing 'canal atmosphere' & one thing I noticed whilst we walked around was the excellent condition 'canal-wise' everything was in, in the Skipton area at any rate. The canals as such, the bank sides, the locks & last but not least, the canal boats; all were in excellent nick! I can only assume that the canals per-se are managed by the BWB? I don't really know how it, the BWB, is funded, but knowing Gordon Brown it will not be cheap for the canal users? Given the brief experience we've had of canals & such like I cannot see any advantage in selling the waterways off to the private sector. The inevitable result of this will be increased costs coupled with a reduction in service. A final question. The one thing I DID notice whilst at Skipton was the total absence of anglers. I read the IYCF magazine on a regular basis & 'they' are always going on about canal fishing being an 'undiscovered world of plenty'. My question is, can one fish the canals in the Skipton area & if so what is one likely to catch? Regards, Widjid. |
