Re: has anyone got a wormery ?

wife has a compost type one( that i steal from)

seems the most imprtant thing is turning the mix everynow and then

also most importantly hasa grill to lift mix 1/2 inch of bottom of bin and drainage tap at bottom as get loads of liquid from them, and once when she didnt drain for a month she nearly drowned them all

hope this helps

Re: has anyone got a wormery ?

If you are allowed, place the largest piece of cardboard on some earth, worms tend to lie under the cardboard, the best I ever used was the box my bed came in, about 6 1/2 feet by 4feet. Keep moist and worms, esp lobs seem to lie and wait for you to lift it up and take them fishing.
Composting worms are generally smaller, and drainage is vital, use the liquid on the garden. Avoid too much grass cutting in one go, the heat can wipe out the worms.
Personally speaking, you can beat afertile bed, and the digging helps you keep fit, and popular around the house.

Re: has anyone got a wormery ?

I have a big bucket with a mixture of earth (not clay) and damp Spagnum moss (from the garden centre) and a few potato peels with old sliced up apples on top, with a few holes in the bottom for drainage. I keep it in the shade on the cold concrete floor of the shed.
My worms love it and often when Im getting some worms for a fishing trip I find newly hatched tiny worms in it.
I start off by digging some red worms (not lob worms) and putting them in the bucket. when I come home from fishing I empty any ones left over back into the bucket.
I never keep a worm if it is slightly damaged as the rest of your worms will just die off. Theres something about dead worms that seems to cause this.
I keep the soil damp and every month I top up the soil/spagnum moss and add slices of apple (and potato peel) as they get eaten or rot away.
I don't like Brandlings (the ones with the red and yellow rings) or the ones with yellow tails as I find that they are not as good for bait as redworms. I do occasonally put a few lob worms (night crawlers in the US) in if I am going to be stalking for Carp and find that they mix with the redworms OK.
This may not be the accepted way to keep them but it works brilliantly for me. Plus it means that I always have a stock of fresh bait for those unplanned trips.
Tight lines.

Re: has anyone got a wormery ?

They like egg shells, tea leaves and any veg peelings. Go easy on the potato peelings as they take time to break down. Don't use any citrus fruit at all they will not like that one bit! Turn the soil mixture over from time to time as they like some air in the soil. Don't let the soil get too wet as they will drown.

Re: has anyone got a wormery ?

I have a double ended wooden box ,ie lid either end.
this i fill with damp newspaper .
When i want some worms i just turn it over as all the worms which are at the bottom will now be at the top
