Re: Thinking of buying a pole any info Craig, Pole fishing is a huge minefield to explore, pole fishing for Carp, pole fishing for silver fish, short long rigs the list is endless. The best thing to do is pop into your local tackle shop, and ask about when the next match is on the canal. Go to the match and as long as you don't make to much noise go and talk and watch the anglers in the match. Or even go for a walk during the weekend and find some anglers fishing the pole. Most of them will most properly be match anglers, talk to them, they can advise what’s best for the areas on the canal. The Tackle shop should also give you good advice as well. If you local tackle shop does not deal with poles then find a tackle shop that does. 90% of tackle dealers are spot on and won’t fob you off with what you don't need. As for buying the pole, go for the longest one you can afford and make certain that you can wield it and ask about spares, like top sets or replacement sections, because it does not matter how careful you are we all have mishaps. Good luck. __________________ "The muscles of 20 men, and the brains of 20 mussels",

Re: Thinking of buying a pole any info Hi Craig, Steve's advice is spot on. I would also recommend the following book: http://www.crowoodpress.co.uk/2007/b...+1+86126+988+1 I know both the authors very well indeed and their book is aimed at newcomers to pole fishing. It's a no nonsense, straight forward book which spells out the basics (as well as in depth stuff). I'll confess I've been asked to do a formal review by the publishers and I'm about halfway through reading it! It's excellent and well worth buying because you'll always be "dipping into it" for information and guidance. __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe

Re: Thinking of buying a pole any info I no nothing about pole fishing (yet) but I can vouch for the book, as I too know both authors well and both are fantastic anglers and know their fishing in any respect. I watched Mark Wintle fishing the pole on a few occasion and witnessed him bagging up on silver. (huge bag) Neil (catfish virgin still) is a great fishing the pole too.....I also watched him several times playing huge carp on a pole. Amazing sight. Banana Steve was so kind to inherit me one of his pole and I can't wait to get out and catch my first fish on it under his watchful eyes.....but I think I'll start off with little fish to get a feel of playing and landing fish on a pole. Maybe it would be a good idea to find someone who knows about pole fishing who can take you out and show and explain the basics to you, until you feel confident enough to try on your own. Good luck young man, looking forward to read about your first catch on a pole __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving
