Odd catches?

A couple of years ago I was in a text conversation with my son who I had taken out fishing a couple of times to teach him the basics - and this was just after his first 'solo outing' with one of his friends...

The conversation went something like this...

Me: Did you have a good time?
Him: Yes
Me: Did you catch anything?
Him: Yes
Me: What did you catch?
Him: A duck!

Aparently mid cast a duck had flown by and picked his hook out of the air. I must have spent a couple of hours giggling to myself thinking about him reeling in a duck much like bringing a kite down... :-)

Was wondering if anyone else has had anything else really unusual attached to the end of their line!

Re: Odd catches?

I did exactly that once! I was getting loads of bites, struck and missed and so tried to cast out again as fast as possible. In my haste I didn't spot two Mallards that were coming into land, my rod whipping past their beaks made them think twice about landing and so started to climb. At the same time I had just sent my float flying through the air and couldn't understand why my float hadn't hit the water yet line was still streaming from my reel! One glance at the tip of my rod quickly showed me that, instead of the line going down to the water, it was going up to the clouds and at the end of it was a very surprised and looking duck!

Fortunately I was able to whip the line off the ducks wing without setting the hook in the feathered float thief and my float plopped back into the water some 10 meters beyond the distance it was possible to cast a 2BB float!

Talking Re: Odd catches?

Several times whilst Fly fishing for Trout at dusk, I have hooked Bats. Even managed to accidently knock one into the water once. And yes, they can swim..... Always released un-harmed though. It gives you quite a shock, as you usually get a sharp tug on the back-cast followed by a whirring noise as the somewhat surprised bat come whizzing by your ear on the forward cast.
Oh & Pingu did catch a Crayfish on a Troutfly once when I was giving him some flyfishing lessons. But only Pingu could do that...
