New Line for reel help

I am new to fishing and have inherited a load of tackle to get me started.

However the tackle has not been used in about fifteen years. Its old but good quality (or so I am told), Shimano reels and Daiwa rods etc.

Because the tackle has been left sitting around gathering dust for so long I have been told I will need to change the line on the reels as they won't be as strong as they should be.

My question is how the hell do I do that. Do I remove the old line and tie the new one round the spool like you would a yo-yo or is there a special technique.

Thanks in advance

Hi there, yep - right to change the line.

Either sit laboriously pulling the line off by hand or you can buy a 'line stripper - about £10-£15 and it will do the job for you. Either of these ways, make sure you dispose of the line carefully - cut up or burn or a bin bag for the incinerator ! That way animals wont get caught & tangled in the line.

Or - the method I use, old empty spool, large drill bit & masking tape - drill - simply tie the end onto the spool and turn on the drill - soon comes off and neatly around the old spool - throw away !

Tie your line onto the reel spool with a timberhitch knot or really any knot that holds and is quite small and wind the new line on - make sure you either tie the new line on with the bail arm open or pass it underneath otherwise it wont wind on ! (assuming a Fixed spool reel)

When you wind the new line on - keep it under tension and watch out for twists in the line, once on - go for a few practice casts to 'bed the new line in.

Good luck !

Re: New Line for reel help

when putting new line on I stick the spool of line in a bucket of water and hold the line with a wet cloth to apply tension as i reel in.this helps the line settle and stops friction from heating the line up and damaging it.
