Do I really need...... I'm planning a trip to fish for barbel, now I always read about people using a barbel rod My question is...Do I REALLY need a barbel rod to catch barbel or could I use either a heavy feeder or a carp rod 2.5 TC....as I'm not planning on specify on barbel fishing and I'm seriously running out of space to put ALL my rods ![]() __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: Do I really need...... I'd say the tip on your carp rod would be too heavy to spot a bite unless the fish rips off. I'd go for the heavy feeder if thats what you have, as the tip is better for spotting the shyer bites. obviously don't quote me, I have been wrong before! ![]()

Re: Do I really need...... A Heavy/medium feeder will be fine for the Barbel, to be honest i would use a medium feeder because where there are barbel there is a good chance of a good chub, both fish will be good fun on a medium feeder rod. I would use 6 - 8lb main line and 4- 6 lb hook legths. apparently halibut pellts work really well for barbel as well as good cube of meat. I have a couple of days off soon and i am going to fish the Avon near bath that is renowned for barbel, so i will have to see if my advise works. ![]() __________________ "The muscles of 20 men, and the brains of 20 mussels",

Re: Do I really need...... I would definately advise you use your feeder rod. The carp rod is just going to be a bit too heavy. To be honest I've caught as many barbel (well over 100) using my feeder rod as I have using my barbel specialist rod. To be honest though I've caught even more on my Chapman 500 cane rod which is about 1.5lb test curve. Bait wise, I would only use halibut pellets where they have been used a lot by other anglers, as it sometimes takes the barbel a while to get used to them. My favourite bait is big chunks of luncheon meat dusted in turmeric...the smell really draws fish into your swim..magic! ![]()
