| Home made floats Can anybody help me source some of the materials for making floats at home. I mainly plan to have a go at making some of the traditional 'perch bobbers', I thought I could make the bodies by putting some balsa dowling into the jaws of a powerdrill and using an emery board as a mini lathe, but can the peices be bought? Any help/ideas gratefully recieved. Will post some pics when I get something done. |

| Re: Home made floats When and why did they make porcupine quills illegal. They've become very hard to find here too!! Some can still be found for supplying Native American (can't say Indians) craftwork. this is porcupine quills, not beads __________________ A bad day fishing is better than a good day working! | Re: Home made floats I've checked a bit further about the porcupine quills and it seems there is some confusion about whether they are illegal or not - certailny I've been told they are...but I can't verify it very easily. Another source has told me that killing porcupines for their quills in the USA is now illegal but you can collect shedded quills..which makes it much harder to sell decent quantities...However there is a great float making article here http://www.fishingmagic.com/news/art...s/UAN/2059/v/3 it includes a link to a guy who sells float making materials http://www.tacklebargains.co.uk/acat...Materials.html If you scroll to the bottom there is a guy who comments who sells African porcupine quills at this website http://www.dogmeier.com/orderuk.html that should keep you going! |

| Re: Home made floats On the subject of porqupine quills, a friend who returned from the Himalya's a while ago told me that they just ly arond the place where the beast shed them. As soon as manic may is out, (lots of work this month) I shall take myself down to the models shop, and do some spending online, many thanks for the pointers, I shall post pics of the montrosities I create later. |

| Re: Home made floats Mat if you try the model shop in Trowbridge, they sell small modeling lathes and in cordons they can get the balsa wood. I have also used swan feathers instead of the porcupine quills, they can just as good as long as you varnish them with a good marine varnish, same with peacock quills as well. __________________ "The muscles of 20 men, and the brains of 20 mussels", |
