species hunt i wonder if anyone would be interested in a species hunt, i know we are all scattered around the country but we don't have to get together,we would have to rely on members honesty(there's nothing to gain by cheating), just do it over the year -start jan 1st and see who gets the biggest number of fish in a year.sea.fresh or game it doesn't matter, just a thought,i did it with my club a few years ago and it was fun.

Re: species hunt I think this is a brilliant idea. I mean, not only will it encourage us to use different tactics, but if we try and photograph the fish, as they're caught, then we'll get an excellent identification resource into the bargain. I used to do a competition like this with my pub every year: It was called the "Golden Maggot", and there was only a trophy as a prize to discourage any motivation to cheat! We met at the pub on Friday evening, fished til 12.00 pm Sunday, and logged all the different fish we caught, venue and bait. This covered sea and freshwater, so we all had a good laugh travelling all over the county and seeing who could stay up the longest! What it did do, was introduce a whole new world in light-tackle, since we all started using carp rods and quiver-tips to catch mini-species down the piers and harbour walls, photographed them and put them back. Some of them are really beautiful too, like Sea Scorpions, different kinds of Wrasse, Blennies, Shannies and the like. Great fun. A fish indentification handbook is a real help here, and they're really interesting reading too. Cheers, JB.

Re: species hunt perhaps we could have teams of two, then the non coarse fishers can team up with somebody who does, nobody will be left out then, they wouldn't have to fish together, just put their results together,. i'm sure me and john-boy would be able to lay down the gauntlet to some of our west country friends NOW THERE'S A CHALLENGE !
