in pursuit of a smut

well the sea rods came out for a session after i was tipped off by a freind (chris ) that he had been catching smooth hounds off a local mark after i saw the pic of him with his 8lb smooth hound i did not need to be asked twice to go .so i sorted out some bait made up the rods and i was down the quick as a flash .
so i was soon traveling down this pot holed track which nearly took the bottom of my car out and it went on for ages and then i came ouit on a tarmac road which if i had traveled another 500 yrds i could have driven down easier .
i walked on to the beach and it looked really fishy with man made reefs along to my right .
which i will have to investigate on another occassion.

i was to head along the beach 100 yrds from the post at the entrance as this would put me directly at the end on a bar which was about 80 yrds out .
also it had a groyne of stones to my imeadiate left too so i had some good features to fish near .

i was excited with the prospect of tackling hopefully a smut from a local beach but time will tell if i get it right or have a bit of luck .
soon the rods were baited up with crab baits on a pulley rig with single size 2/0 wide gap hooks on 13.4 kg hook length .

both rods were sent out and the wait would start . now it started to cloud up and a brisk breeze picked up too ,i did not want to look but i turned and look over my left shoulder and saw the biggest black cloud approaching ,hmmmm i thought i might get a tad wet here ,and sure enough the heavens opened and i got a good soaking as i did not take a brolly and thought it was not going to rain but it was soon over and it did not bother me to much .

the first thing i noticed was the lack of crab attention i was getting which meant i could leave out a bit longer than normal and hopefully the smuts could get on to the scent trail .
also there was no weed which again would not build up on my line and pull me out of position .
i was really confident even though the hours tick by with out a single bite even when the tide started to recede i was confident but alas it was not to be .
but i,m coming back here as i feel it will produce me a fish but i,m bringing chris with me to make sure i get it right .
but i had a good night regardless i got wet but it got me out for a few hours .

tightlines
kevin

Cool Re: in pursuit of a smut

Nice Pics BM....Smutts have a habit of devouring all crabs in an area then moving off to come back and hoover them up again. Stick it out as if it's a known Smutt mark...they will be back. Size of tide also has a lot to do with their movements.

We catch them in the Bristol Channel now a long way up into the mouth of the Estuary off Portishead.
