A night at Dunwich.

Certhia decided she would like a birdwatching trip up to Minsmere and Dunwich Heath last week. "OK" I said, "and we could get in some fishing on Dunwich beach also".

So we de-winterised the camper van, and away to East Anglia via the Dartford crossing. Stopped at Saxmundham to pick up some lug (some of the best Common Lug I have seen) at the tackle shop there.

Camped up, heated up and got outside a splendid veal casserole Certhia had prepared earlier, then down the cliff to the shingle beach at about 9 pm.

The tide was about a quarter-way up (High at 1.15 am) and there was action straight away. A Cod on one rod and a personal best 4oz Poor Cod on the other. That Poor Cod was double my previous best - it looked huge.

It was a beautiful clear night, but COLD, and got even colder. Luckily there was no wind or it would have been worse. After the good start, bites were few and far between, just one more cod, but we decided to stick it out until after high tide.

A final cod just on high tide, and it was out with the filleting knife and trimming the three sizeable fish we had. My hands were numb by the time I had done it (should have let Certhia do it ) and it was a very painful thaw-out back at the van.

Next day was a birding day, and Certhia was delighted to find a Firecrest, which with all the other species at Minsmere (Marsh Harriers, Bitterns, Bearded Reedlings etc) made it a really worthwhile trip.

That evening it was nice to taste fresh cod again, together with peas, spuds and sprouting broccoli.

Sorry no pics this time, but y'all know what a cod looks like!
