| lol urmm i've only ever caught one conger and that was from the shore, and lost about a million in the rocks. My advice is as soon as ya rod goes take up the slack, hold it tight to see for any more nods, wait for a bigg nodd then hit him and bully him like mad out of the water becuase even if they can get their tail on a rock on the way up they can grip on with their tail or anything and thats it they won't move, so keep their heads up and get em in quick and use heavy gear. dont do what i did the other day and get a beasting bite and let your bailarm off that was biggest mistake i've made in fishin and i make a lot of mistakes! just ask steve devon lol. any way thats bout it from me bye. | Re: Conger from the shore - Recommendations? The shore record is just over 68lb, caught from devils point, plymouth. Lived in Plymouth for a few years now and it is second to none for shore conger, if that record is ever to be broken, its gonna come from the Tamar. My prefered gear to fish for 'em is a 6-8oz boat uptide (little extra length for the cast, not that I ever need to cast far as theyre in the structure below your feet) matched to a shimano tld 15,loaded with 40lb mono (battle against rubbing rocks). I use simple running ledgers with weak link to a big lead, 150lb mono hooklink to either an 8/0 or 10/0 hook, baited with the biggest bait that will fit on! fresh makeral kills, flapper, or whole fillet with a couple of squid as well, but if theres a lot of crabs then cuttle is your best bet. If your fishing a scratch around rod as well then use any pouting, rockling or baby pollack you catch, either live or dead...........Always fish at night...........not saying big eels arent caught in daylight, but in the shallower water they are far more active, and on the hunt for food in the darkness, especially over slack water, or on a small tide. Hit the bites early, if you wind into nothing then leave your bait there, a big eel will often pick a dropped bait up again. When you set the hook, have your drag cranked rite up, dont give them an inch, you can slacken off once the fish is nearer the surface (good idea as a sudden dive can pull the hook or snap u up. Best of luck! |

| Re: Conger from the shore - Recommendations? 68lb 8oz caught at Devil's Point, Plymouth in 1991 Damn, must remember to read page 2 before posting! LOL Anyway, something I've been thinking about for a while is a night session off the back of the breakwater in Brixham. After watching a programme about the big catfish in France, rowing big baits out past the rocks and just onto the start of the sand might pay dividends? Who's up for that? has anyone got a kayak? |
