Re: desperatley want to catch a conga

holyhead breakwater, any state of tide. are you using whole mackerel as they come or are you making them in to flappers?

to make a flapper, get your mackie by its tail, cut down to the backbone with a sharp filleting knife right at the tail. turn the knife so that the sharp edge faces the head and run it up along its spine to the head (just behind the fin on its flank). do the same on the other side. this should leave you with 2 fillets "flapping" either side of the backbone but still attached to the head. simply cut the spine away where it joins the head and you have a flapper. defo works better than whole mackie.

hook they mackie with a hook big enough to go through its head and still have plenty of pointy bit showing and drop your rig over the sea side of the breakwater ( i use a boat rod with a tope trace, and bring a decent beach caster to target other species while i'm waiting) keep checking bait regularly as the crabs round there can strip it to nothing in very short time and the attractive oils that you release by flappering the fish disperse quite quick as well.

TMH
