Re: Alternative Cod baits for the Bristol Channel?

This is a subject Mike and I tackle on nearly every trip 'What about this bait skip?' or 'What about this method skip?' There is a simple answer - Fresh Lugworm/Ragworm sometimes with and some times without squid tips work the best fished hard on the bottom. And that means using the appropriate leads and methods.

Hunderds of anglers on all the different boats out of Penarth evey year think they are going to find/invent the new tactic which will take Bristol Channel cod fishing by storm - THEY DONT!!!

My advice to anglers is to buy the best possible worm available if your local tackle shop doesnt have any ring around and find one that does. Why pay your fuel to get to the boat, pay for your food whilst your out, pay for your trip then skimp on your bait????

PS Richard I am sure I dont need to tell you where to put your spratts!!!!

Re: Alternative Cod baits for the Bristol Channel?

My dad reckons that for a couple of weeks when the sprats come up channel and no one is catching any cod that you should change your tactics completly and use worm tipped with sprat at roughly 10ft off bottom, to achieve this he downtides with a significantly lighter lead and thicker mono.

Richard,if you time it right, your sprat bait may very well catch more than Danny's worm baits!!!

I vote lug but.......anyone tried to mimick the vibration of a fish with something that vibrates?!! Seriously, maybe worth a try. I've got an old wet shaver that is waterproof that vibrates. Might give it a try for a few casts net time I'm out

Might as well throw some aftershave and some talcum powder on your bait while your at it. You`ll get just the same results lol
