| Re: Cod Fishing South England Richard, There's been a few cod reported now. Squid rules. Several whole squid on a pennel rig for cod in particular, dropping back to a single squid on pennel or a single large hook if you prefer to pick up whatever comes along. Take uptide and downtide rods if you have both, the marks vary from 50ft to 150ft so at times uptiding will be impossible. Not too much tide on monday but on the downtider, you want braid and leads to 1.5lb at least, in case the skipper goes out deep. Trace strength should be not less than 50lb. There's a lot of conger about on the grounds this time of year and 70-100lb mono isn't unreasonable to avoid being bitten off. Uptide or down, a 3-4ft trace is fine. The stiffer mono isn't likely to put the cod off. Some folk like muppets, I like to use glowgrubs or beads and a booby bead up the trace. If you REALLY want to try for a big cod then use a live pout or whiting. For some extra fun if the boat isn't crowded, try a baited Hokkai rig on a very light rod at slack water. There's some huge pout around this time of year and they can go well if given the chance. Keep a close eye on the bigger rods though, slack water is when the conger seem to feed. Have fun! Steve |
