Cod Fishing Baits and rigs

Cod Fishing Baits and rigs - Well with the first frost around the corner and already some nice cod being caught what is your favourite cod bait /rig

From the boat ?

From the shore ?

Mine which was shown by a few forum members is a pennel rig 4/0 bottom hook and then a 2/0 above three lugworms and both hooks tipped with squid

So whats your favourite cod fishing tip

P.S thanks to the forum members for the tips as one thing about fishing is you never stop learning !!!

Bring on the cod

Re: Cod Fishing Baits and rigs

Typical Bristol Channel Cod Bait

Pennel rig, main hook 4/0 or 6/0,secondary hook 4/0.4-6 worms ,my preferance is rag,as they last longer in the strong tide (preferably fresh dug,as the farmed stuff from most tackle shops just doesn`t have the natural scent trail).Lug is great also "if you can get proper BLACK `S," blow lug doesn`t last long in the fast tide run.Tipped off with Squid on both hooks.

Cod have "BIG" mouths, present "BIG "baits

Re: Cod Fishing Baits and rigs

By eck thats a splendid cod bait, makes me hungry just looking at it.
Bit to big for slinging 150yrds though, for me its a paternoster clip down with pennal rig, size 2/0 hooks or a pompey loop with 2/0s

Cool Re: Cod Fishing Baits and rigs

Nice Cod bait Mike....bit small for COD around my part of the World.......

But seriously you do need to put a decent sized bait out for the Cod in the Bristol Channel. They can't see a damn thing so hunt by scent alone....big bait = big scent trail + it lasts longer in the tide.

So long as the bait is "in line" you can still chuck it a fair way, but in my experience you don't need to cast 200 yards plus 120 yards max with most fish coming in the 40 -60 yard mark.

My favourite rig is a Pennel Pulley size if using worm with tipps then size 2/0 with a 1 or 1/0 top hook. I use a smaller top hook coz sometimes you can hook a small whiting or Pout and its an instant live bait rig My 2 largest Channel fish came on this rig and live bait trick.

If using whole squid then 4/0 and 2/0 top hook.

Hope this helps Richard.

Re: Cod Fishing Baits and rigs

Ben.......The Rig in the pic is more for squid than worm, although i used that actual rig all day today with rag,lug and squid,so long as you tease the worm over the eye its ok and they tend not to slip babk down. The line is 50lb mono,to resist the Thornbacks and Congers that frequent the same coral patches as the cod, they like rag and squid lots as well as the cod.

Sorry smoothie didnt have a lot of bait left when the piccie was taken..
