Cod all over the boat.......

.....when the skipper came up from the galley and said "You lads had better pick some of them cod up and put in boxes, a'fore someone breaks a leg. We were out on a lobster boat off Miscou Island New Brunswick in the spring 72, I think it was, jigging in about 6 fath: and a moderate sea running. That's the only time Jack and I got to fish cod, was when the skipper heaved too for lunch, many fish at 10 to 12 bounds came over the gunnels but there was one we weighed in at 42 pounds, Bill thought he had snagged an old lobster trap.
Our 30 minutes of jigging landed 300 pounds that day, and what a trip that was.
Best regards,
Deepsix.

I see what you mean, Old smoothound. You more than likely don't have capelin in the channel either, these big cod feed on the capline from underneath while the gannits dive to what seem like great depths to gain their share of the spoils. Sure makes for a lot of fun, with all this going on around.
best regards,
Deepsix

Re: Cod all over the boat.......

Sounds like a great day out, and a fantastic fish.

Just read a book called Cod that says the cod are all but gone from that area these days is that true?

Re: Cod all over the boat.......

"Just read a book called Cod that says the cod are all but gone from that area these days is that true?".....Well fishingbonsai, It depends on who you are talking to. My wife and I had quite a chat with a Newfoundlander a while back who knows a diver, and that person claims he has seen cod by the thousands dead on the bottom with just their guts eaten out by Seals, apparently this is the only part of a cod a seal wants.
One other point of interest, lobster fishermen have away caught cod about 12" long in their traps in the spring, in fact when my friend phones me with this information its time to pack my gear and head east for some cod jigging.
Best regards,
Deepsix.
