Traces 40lb mono, with beads, spinners, muppets. Hooks 6/0-8/0.
Pennel rigs work well alllowing you to present one or two squid.
Bait (yes) squid, calms, peelers, cuttlefish, either cut into strips or baby cuttle from tackle shops, squid works well on its own or as a cocktail with calms/peeler.
Cheers John - seems squid is the favourite

I used to stuff them with mackeral and worm does that still go or is it all Xmas tree decor now

Re: Sea Fishing For Cod

Hi all

On the East Coast, Suffolk area, they seem to like Lug or Black Lug and Squid.

Plenty of it to act as an atractor. Some of our club members swear by "Booby Beads" which I have to admit do seem to work some of the time.

Regards

Coddy

Smile Re: Sea Fishing For Cod

Bristol Channel Cod luv King Rag and Squid, we sometimes use whole squid stuffed with black lug or blow lug and squid parcels to pick out the bigger fish.

From the boat uptiding with Pennel running ledger is best.
Hook sizes 5-8/0 depending on bait size.

From shore Pennel Pulley rig, 4-6/0

We always experiment to find what is working on the day. My experience is if they are there they'll eat it!

We have caught Cod with 8-10 crabs in their gut and they still tried to scoff a whole squid.

Cheers
Shaun

Re: Sea Fishing For Cod

I've stuffed squid with minced prawns and oats all soaked it pilchard oil.

Results, no better than plain baits.

Re: Sea Fishing For Cod

Welll with winter approaching and thoughts centring around the "C" word, I was browsing through the Cod Forum and saw this thread, which is fascinating.

From the shore in the Deal/Dover area, I think Cod like nothing more than Yellowtails or Black Lug, especially in November/December, although they seem to like Peeler more in January/February. Yellow/Squid cocktail is also top.

Personally, I don't believe in piling on a huge bait, especially when beachcasting, where it obviously makes things a bit harder! I've always had the best results on a single or double large yellowtail. I don't think huge baits discourage the smaller fish much either, I've had many a 1/2lb Pouting hanging on the bottom of a dog sh*t bait made of squid and half a dozen lug!

I reckon Pennel or Wishbone is best 3/0 Kamasan or a 2/0 Cox & Rawle preferred hardware! I use a 80lb trace with 20lb amnesia for hook lengths.

Cor, I have to say, I can't wait to get fishing this winter - I've just got that feeling that it's gonna be good!!

Cheers,
JB.
