Cool 2nd hobbie or sport......

So whats you second interest after fishing if you first is fishing that is?

Mines Power kiteing and kite boarding! Makes me sound like a big kid really but till you have tried it you dont understand! its a good workout on your arms and all whilst your having fun! Made a few mistakes when i started but am quite into it now! I go with a mate and he owns a mounting board!(a big skate board really) well it looks like one with big wheels anyway! First time we tried that with the kite it was raining and blowing a good force 7! I managed to stay on the board for a while but reilised that i was unable to stop i had to crash!! lol (now that hurt!) i've never been so fast with the aid of a motor! if the winds not that good we take the board up the downs and skate down the hills with quite a bit of pace! the worst thing with this is the walk back up! The kite has a width of ten foot and has the power to lift you off the ground but then it gets dangerous! i've seen peeps fly 15 foot into the air with there kites before! i couldnt beleive it nd thats what got me into the flying kites i think! Im nowhere near that standerd yet but when if i get a new kite im going to be out much more if the fishing aint that good!

Well thats abit about one of my other hobbies anyone else want to share theres?

Yes mate, but not in UK waters though. I tend to dive the Red Sea from Egypt, as in my opinion probably has some of the best reef systems in the world right now. The Barrier is good but only on the outer reefs, and that's a National Park and off limits. The inner reefs like all commercial dived reefs are suffering from great abuse. Cuba and other Carib sites havew some decent reefs but they are over dived by inexperienced 'holiday divers' who crash into coral and grab hold of it to steady themselves. Where I dive in Egypt there is a protection agency that has been setup and each dive centre, and the dive masters on the boats are responsible for the maintenance and care of several reefs, hence there is a lot less damage than other places in the world.

The Egyptians are tough on offenders too. 2 years ago I and a group of fellow divers saw a bunch of very rich Russians from our hotel damaging the reefs (taking coral as momento's) and killing fish for fun (filming this with underwater video) and we reported the incident to our charter skipper, who in turn reported it to the authorities. Within 20 minutes there was a powerful naval launch on the scene and the Russinas were carted off, not to be seen again for the remainder of the 2 weeks we were there. It's a shame more governments don't act in such a forceful way.

Re: 2nd hobbie or sport......

Ben,

I don't understand ANY of it. Coral is a living organism and some slow growing corals take 25 years to grow 1 inch. And then we get morons who can't keep neutral bouyancy crashing into coral and breaking off 2 or 3 feet, that's 600-900 hundred years of coral growth. They then look at you and shrug their shoulders, or go, 'oops, sorry', and all I want to do is removed their weight belts or cut their air lines.

It's ignorance like this that does so much damage, not just to marine environments, but all environments

Sorry, but it makes me so .

Rant over
