"Just a perfect day"

[Foggy]

Just a perfect day.

They approached the bank
on tip toe lest they scare a big one
Rays of sun began to flicker on the bushes
to testify that night had gone.

And on this day young Jake delights
his birthday wish is here
For dad to take a day from work
he does it every year.

I’ve got the bait the lad exclaimed
but dad puts finger to his lip
My son we must be quiet today
keep silence and no slip.

Jake chose his favourite float
and dared to peep through waving reeds
What wonders lie beneath those ripples
what monster glides his way and feeds.

Now eleven Young Jake had learnt,
his father taught him well
Expertly rod and line extended out
what next no one could tell.

The Moore hens clucked
though none were seen
A mallard launched to air
its neck an iridescent green.

But these distractions were ignored
Jakes eyes had just one view
His little float just yards away
his favourite green and blue.

He dared an upward glance at dad
a reassuring smile returned
No words from dad were needed
their bond once more confirmed.

And then the monster struck!
the float now shooting down
To depths unknown it disappeared
Jake struck without a sound

But Dad just yelped, go get him boy
take care or off hell go
The reel gave line and almost smoked
it screamed and shuddered so.

And Dad exclaimed avoid the weeds
don’t let this bugger go
But Jake controlled and masterful
just muttered dad I know.

The bending rod bore witness
that here a monster fought
That Jake and he would battle
until the last resort.

Composure gone, his dad just cried.
oh WOW oh YES Success
As in it came towards the net
a king of carp no less.

They ate some food in silence
the sun now sinking low
Where did the time go Jake enquired
his dad just said “don’t know”.
