Nanny knows best.

Ive had it up to here (ok you cant see me but im pointing at my head) with this bloody nanny state.

Right, there isnt a single problem in this world that wouldnt be cured or improved if there were less people.

So why are governments obsessed with our safety?

It should not be the governments job to make decisions for my safey,

If i choose not to wear a seat belt, then so be it. my choice.

Hospital are now to discriminate against the smokers and obese, sorry chum no by pass for you because you smoke.

What about pot holers, climbers, motor racing drivers etc, will they be refused treatment because the endangered their own lives?

Banning smoking is in my opinion a breach of human rights. If non smokers wanted a smoke free atmosphere then pubs would have provided smoke free bars years ago.

Government should promote risk taking as a means of reducing our overcrowded population. perhaps even promote dangerous sports, bring back the colleseum and let criminals wrestle lions, close the hospitals, dig huge holes in major roads in the middle of the night, Mix football fans with opposing teams,oh the mind bogles with subtle ways of getting rid of people.

A little over the top? maybe but think of the benefits of lower population.

No housing shotage, more food, no ques, more jobs, less crime, no traffic jams, loads of parking spaces, Lower co2 emissions, more fish :) , and so on.

With all these benefits WHY do they seem intent on saving us from ourselves?

Foggy

So is having smoke blown into your face if you're a non smoker. Why should people have the opportunity of heart disease and cancer thrust upon them by others? To me that's equal to shooting someone, but the death with cancer is far more long-lasting and heart-wrenching. At least being shot is far quicker. I'm a nurse and have seen people die in all manner of terrible ways due to smoking. Ever seen seen someone vomit black tar and then die shortly afterwards? It would change your attitude for sure, it changed mine. Well, that and the fact I was having chest pain when I was only 31. I gave smoking shortly afterwards. That was 7 years ago.

Of course, it's everyones right to smoke or indulge in dangerous pursuits if they want, but it's not fine when other people are are put at risk because of it.

Just my opinion. Smoke away if you want to.

Rob

Re: smoking ban/social /darts /pub etc(almost a month on)a non smokers view

I'm on Foggy's side....
Instead of making cigarettes less dangerous but reducing the tar, nicotine and carcinogens......i i BOOST IT!! make them sooo poisonous that they kill in 2 or 3 years instead of 20 to 30!!???
That might get smokers attention??

Nannyism will finish the human race

Well indeed why should you receive second hand smoke, its expensive stuff and in my opinion you should pay smokers for stealing their by product.

Were all going to die, lets just get on with it and tell the Nanny state to leave us all alone.

Another point comes to mind, what about all these silly handrails and guards everywhere, rip em out!. If people cant walk a path without falling off then thats natural selection and the gene pool is better off without them.

How about, in the interests of population reduction we rewire traffic lights so that they all show green in every direction?

We have created a society where risks and danger have been minimised, our ancestor lived with risk, UG would say to himself, "Before i run out into the clearing and grab that juicy lump of meat I better check for sabre tooth tigers"

The result of this nannyism will be a human race of jelly blobs unable to think or act for themselves and totally unaware of any danger.(This may take some time). Ideal fodder for marauding misteron blob harvesters gathering protein for their home worlds.

Fair enough but smoking has been banned in all public places, what about smokers rights? Why couldnt they have allowed for some public places that DO allow smoking?
If a pub or restruant feel it economicaly viable they could then have either an all smoking establishment or a seperate room for smoking.

The British have always been known for fair play and compromise / toleration. I just hate total Bans, its not British.

smokers rights? you have the right to smoke just as i have the right not to. however if i also have the choice to have a smokefree pub then count me in. i can see your point about a having a few places still being able to smoke might not be a bad idea as now its a case of fighting past the smokers on the doorstep just to get into the pub!
this ban will be popular with some people(me) and hated by others(foggy ) but at the end of the day its here to stay so proberly better start to get used to it...........if you can.

Boss,

They thought prohibition was here to stay, it caused the biggest wave of civil disobediance and crime that the world has ever witnessed.

I saw in the news that a british boxer (such a nice man too) was actually shot yesterday after trying to stop 3 men from smoking.

Of course I dont condone that, but bad laws are made to be challenged and beleive me this one will be challenged. We all create nuisance, maybe your next door neighbour mows his lawn just as your taking a nap in the garden, you tolerate it.(proberly). Loud music on the beach, shouting yobs, the list is endless. Its all to do with too many people in too small a place i guess.

BUT the British way is not to ban things, it is to try to reach a compromise and that hasnt happened in this case, all free thinking people should be against this nanny state.

If we are looking at things to ban then alcohol should feature very highly, Ive yet to see anyone kick someone to death after smoking a fag! but it happens regularly after a drinking spree. Families are broken up. our inner cities are no go areas for decent people at weekends, and if its health your concerned with then our mental hospitals have plenty of people with alcoholic dementia, and people are dying all the time with sclorosis of the liver caused by alcohol.

They dont ban it because they cant, they ban smoking because they think they can. hardly a way to run a country.

When a teacher can get many thousands of pounds compensation because her school failed to change her chair that was making farting noises, then I think smokers should have compensation for the destruction of their enjoyment of tobacco.
