Bullheads

Do you have bullheads in the UK.
They are small catfish 6' - 12" ( 15- 30 cm) in length. They are excellent eating.
Three species in North America - black, brown and yellow.

I have recently read a book saying to use very small bullheads as bait. (I think it was for perch) but on reflection it may have been an American book! Not sure this help I will try to find out the name of the book.

Ok first it wasn't a book it was 'Improve Your Coarse Fishing' magasine, second it most definately wasn't recent it was June 2001! (I have a better memory than I thought!) however it was definately English.

Heres some bullheads I caught a few weeks ago.

Also a yellow perch on the right.

yeah we have bullhead, they're a protveted speices-you cnat eat them, they dont tend to grow any more than 6-8" but are good fighters

Yes, we definately have bull heads here but not sure if they are the same. As aks19 says they are protected in this country as I know to my cost as one of my clients had a large development I was working on held up for months as the EA believed there may be some in a ditch running through the site. I understood that they like clean water which is why they became so rare but this ditch was an old colliery feeder and crammed full of old trolleys, plastic bags etc. An ecological survey was carried out and the only signs of life discovered was brown rats!!! Oops, sorry to go off topic.

Definitly not protected here. If you are in an area with bullheads present a worm will not last long on the bottom. Most fishermen consider them a pain in the butt. They don't know what thier missing. Rolled in flour & cornmeal(with salt,pepper & garlic salt) than fried golden in hot lard.
